FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions
Am I a carer?
You may not think you are a carer, but if you look after someone such as your husband or wife, a friend, relative or neighbour who would find it difficult to cope without your support, then you are a carer. This could be due to age, physical or mental illness, substance misuse or disability.
The term ‘carer’ doesn’t always mean a paid professional care-worker.
Still not sure?
Lots of people who are carers do not instantly recognise themselves as such; they often see it as their duty or part of their daily routine.
You don’t have to live with the person you look after and every caring situation is unique and the amount of care that different carers give varies enormously.

What is a Carer’s Assessment?
If you provide a regular and substantial amount of care for someone aged 18 or over, you can ask the social services department in Hertfordshire for a carer’s assessment. Your right to an assessment, and to the services and support you may receive, is not linked to your income or capital. If you are unsure about this please contact us and we can help get the support you need.
What if the person I care for doesn’t
want me to get support?
Our services are confidential – you don’t need to have the permission of the person you care for to access them. We can work with you to find the best way to support you.
I am caring for a child / young person
can you still help me?
Yes, Crossroads Care provides support for carers of children with care needs through disabilities – physical, mental or sensory impairments, chronic or life-limited conditions. Children aged 0 to 19 years receive support within the home or in the community.
Do you offer specialist support?
Yes we offer a range of specialist support services. The majority of our staff are specifically trained to work with those with all forms of dementia and take pride in the person centred service we can offer. Working in partnership with Alzheimer’s Society in Hertfordshire we offer a Saturday Social Breaks Service for carers of those with dementia at our Day Centre in Stevenage.
End of Life support is available providing emotional, practical and psychological support to carers, family and friends and those living with cancer and other life-limiting conditions in their own homes.
Can I always get the same
Carer Support Worker?
Our aim is to be flexible and provide you with continuity so that the right relationship is developed with the carer and the person being cared for. We will always aim to provide you with the same Carer Support Worker at a time and day to suit you.
